Local Love

As the hustle and bustle of the holidays start, gift lists are made. Many may choose to do their shopping online with big box stores, but there are many others who believe in supporting local.

During the holiday season, “Local” often means the traditional Holiday craft market - events where community halls magically transform into colourful and fragrant bazaars for everything from handmade candles to knitwear to carefully packaged gingerbread cookies, chocolates and more. Behind their tables, professional makers and hobby craftspeople sell their wares – sometimes to support causes or simply to fund their own studios.

Local is also the artisan who is behind the “locally made” imprint on the label. Individuals who make from passion and profession, spending hours in studio or workshops or their own home knitting, weaving, potting, painting, and creating their holiday collections.

Beyond the grassroots, local is also shopping where you live. It’s your main street, and the pop up shop that takes over an empty storefront to brighten up the street with its holiday cheer, or it’s the indie shop down the street philosophically dedicated to stocking the unique and artisan. Their wares may be hand printed tees, yoga bags, beads, eco-wares or indie-brand fashions you can’t find anywhere else. Supporting local has bonuses - no shipping charges, no excess packaging, no pick-up and because it’s local, you can walk, bike or take the transit there.

Shopping local opens the door to other pleasures of meeting like minds. So this holiday, when gifts need bought, consider buying “local”, and help support all those who keep our artisan crafts and indie retail spirit alive. Choose your event. Grab a friend, your cotton shopping bags, a gingerbread latte, and go. Smell, touch, try-on, meet the makers, and enjoy the joy of local love. And perhaps when all’s said and done, that’s a gift in itself.

We’re local and loving it!
